The Indian Kitchen
Tools that earn their drawer space. Two of these came off the mango page because they are used far beyond mango season, and one of them is the only thing here a Konkan kitchen cannot do without.
Buy the scraper before the gadget
If you are furnishing a Konkan kitchen from scratch, the clamp-on coconut scraper comes before anything else on this page. Fresh coconut goes into the curry, the chutney, the solkadhi and the modak, and a scraper turns a ten-minute job into a two-minute one, every single day.
Get the clamp type that screws to the counter edge rather than the handheld blade. The handheld is cheaper, and you will use it twice.
Most of the rest of this page is honest about being optional. A sharp knife does what a mango cutter does. A set of jars does what a masala dabba does. What you are buying in each case is speed and a tidier drawer, not a result you could not otherwise get.
On prices. We do not list prices. Amazon only permits it through their live pricing feed, and a hand-typed number is wrong within a week. Every tile goes to the listing where the current price is.
Ten for the drawer
The two at the top are already in use in our kitchen. Every one of these is a live link.
-
Cutting
Steel mango cutter & pulp separator
Cheeks off in one press. Worth it when you are cutting a dozen, pointless for one.

-
Kulfi
Steel kulfi moulds, pack of 6
Steel pulls heat out faster than plastic, so fewer ice crystals and a denser set.

-
Coconut
Teak coconut scraper
The one tool on this page a Konkan kitchen genuinely cannot work without. Clamp type, not the handheld.
View on Amazon
Teak with a steel blade. Rinse and dry it; the blade rusts if you leave it wet.
-
Knives
Kitchen knife set, 3 pieces
A sharp knife does what most mango gadgets claim to, and it does the other fifty weeks as well.
View on Amazon
One 14.5 cm utility knife and two 12.5 cm. Nylon handles, not wood.
-
Spices
Steel masala box, 9 compartments
Nine katoris and a lid. Replaces nine jars and a drawer you have to dig through.
View on Amazon
Nine rather than the traditional seven, which is two more than most people fill.
-
Mixer
Mixer grinder, 750 W, 3 jars
The workhorse behind every chutney, masala paste and glass of aamras in a Konkan kitchen.
View on Amazon
Before replacing a whole mixer, price a spare jar for the one you have — jars die long before motors do.
-
Cutting
Chopping board, 24 × 34.5 cm
Compressed cellulose rather than wood: dishwasher safe, knife-friendly, and it does not hold the smell of last night's fish.
View on Amazon
Not a wooden board, despite the look of it. Solid wood is the other way to go.
-
Carry
Insulated steel tiffin, 5 tier
Still the best way to carry a wet sabzi. Check the clamp, not the steel.
View on Amazon
Five containers, not three — more than one person needs, right for a family.
-
Diwali
Brass sev sancha, 6 jalis
Out for most of the year and indispensable for the two weeks before Diwali.
View on Amazon
Brass rather than aluminium, and six discs covers chakli, sev and murukku.
-
Cooking
Triply pressure cooker, 3.5 L
The size that actually gets used daily. A 5 L sits in the cupboard.
View on Amazon
3.5 litres, triply base, so it works on induction as well as gas.

The one that is not worth it
Electric mango peelers and electric kulfi churns both exist and neither is worth the counter space. The peeler takes longer to clean than a mango takes to peel, and a kulfi churn solves a problem that a freezer and six hours already solve for free.
The same goes for most single-purpose gadgets sold around March. If a thing only works on one fruit for eight weeks a year, a knife is almost always the better buy.
