About Kokani Mewaa

We are a family mango business from the Konkan. Our fruit goes from the tree to your door without passing through a mandi, an aggregator or a cold store — which is the whole reason this business exists.

Who We Are

Kokani Mewaa is a family-run mango business from the Ratnagiri belt of the Konkan coast in Maharashtra. Our land is bagayat — orchard land — on the laterite soil this stretch of the Konkan is known for, planted mainly with Alphonso, and the family has grown mangoes here for generations.

The name says what we do. Kokan is the narrow coastal strip between the Sahyadri range and the Arabian Sea. Mewaa means fruit — the good kind, the kind you give away at weddings and send to relatives in another city. Putting the two together seemed obvious.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Our orchards sit in the Konkan belt, the region whose particular combination of laterite soil, sea humidity and sharp day-to-night temperature swing gives Alphonso the aroma it is known for. The same graft planted in a different soil and climate produces a recognisably different fruit — this is the reason Alphonso from this region carries a Geographical Indication at all.

How We Work

We pick by maturity, not by date

Fruit is judged on the tree — shoulder fill, the first colour break at the stem end, the float test — and picked with a zela, the long pole with a net bag, so it never drops. Nothing is shaken down. We explain the whole process in detail in our guide to how a Konkan orchard harvests and grades.

We ripen with hay, not chemicals

Our fruit is packed raw in gawat — dry grass — and ripens in your home over roughly five to eight days. We do not use calcium carbide, which is banned under Indian food safety rules and produces a mango that looks uniformly yellow and tastes of nothing. If you have ever been disappointed by a market mango, this is very often why. Our guide on spotting carbide-ripened fruit covers the signs.

We grade honestly

A farm mango is not a cosmetically perfect object. There will be sap marks and small skin blemishes on fruit that is otherwise excellent, and we would rather send you that than a waxed, uniform, flavourless one. What we do not send is bruised fruit, undersized fruit sold at a larger grade, or a box padded out at the bottom.

We pack the same day

Fruit is de-sapped, shade-cured, graded and packed in our own shed, and the box goes out the same day the fruit is picked. There is no cold store step and no warehouse in between.

Why We Sell Direct

The traditional route for Konkan mangoes runs through the APMC market at Vashi and then through one or more traders before reaching a buyer. It works, and it has supported this region for generations. But it also means the fruit is several days and several handlings older by the time anyone eats it, and the grower receives a fraction of what the buyer pays.

Selling direct fixes both ends of that. You get fruit that left the tree this week, and we get a price that makes it worth farming carefully rather than farming for volume. It also means we can tell you exactly which orchard your box came from, which no aggregator can do.

The Season Is Short

Alphonso is not a year-round product and we will not pretend otherwise. The harvest runs roughly from March to early June, peaking in April and May, and ends when the monsoon arrives. Outside those weeks there is no fresh Konkan Alphonso — anyone selling it in September is selling you something else. Our month-by-month season calendar sets out what is actually available when.

What You Can Expect From Us

  • Honest availability. If a grade is sold out, we will say so rather than substitute quietly.
  • Fruit picked at proper maturity and packed the day it is harvested.
  • No carbide, no wax, no artificial colouring.
  • A real person on the other end of the phone for the whole season, including after your box arrives.
  • A fair response if something goes wrong in transit — see our refund and replacement policy.

Beyond Selling Mangoes

A large part of this site is not a shop at all. Most of what people want to know about Alphonso — how to ripen it, whether to refrigerate it, how to tell real from fake, what to do with the ones that ripen too fast — is badly served online, and we get the same questions every season. So we have written them down properly in our mango guide. You are welcome to use it whether you buy from us or from the vendor down your street.
