Frequently Asked Questions
Everything below is the answer we would give on the phone. Where the honest answer is “it depends” or “we cannot promise that”, it says so, because a seasonal fruit business that promises certainty is lying about something.
Ordering and price
Why is there no price on the website?
Because it would be wrong within a week. Alphonso is a harvested crop, not a manufactured product — the rate moves with the day's arrivals, the weather in the preceding fortnight, and how far into the season we are. Early-season fruit in late March costs a great deal more than the same fruit in mid-May. Printing a number would mean either quoting high all season or quoting a price we cannot honour. Message us on WhatsApp and you get today's actual rate for the pack size you want.
What is the actual ordering process, step by step?
WhatsApp, on +91 88052 79498. Tell us the pack size, your delivery pin code and roughly when you want the fruit. We confirm the current price, whether we can reach your pin code, and the dispatch date. There is no cart and no online checkout, which is deliberate — half of what we need to agree with you is availability and timing, and that is a conversation rather than a form.
Do you take payment before or after delivery?
Before dispatch, by UPI or bank transfer, once you have confirmed the price and we have confirmed stock. We do not hold card details and there is no payment gateway on this site.
Can I order for a wedding, an office, or as a corporate gift?
Yes, and the earlier the better — bulk orders are the ones most likely to be affected by a bad week of weather, so lead time is what protects them. Tell us the number of boxes, the delivery window and whether the boxes go to one address or many. For gifting to several addresses, the pack of 24 usually works out better than splitting a 48.
What you are buying
Why do you sell by count rather than by weight?
Because count is what you can check and weight is what can be gamed. A dozen is a dozen when you open the box. A “one kilo” box can be four large mangoes or seven small ones, and the smaller fruit is cheaper to grow and buy. Selling by the piece means the thing we are quoting is the thing you receive, and it is also how the Konkan trade has always sold a peti.
How big are the mangoes in each pack?
They are graded to a size band per box, so the fruit in a given box is consistent with itself. The actual size band shifts through the season — mid-season fruit is generally larger than the first pickings. We will tell you the current grade when you ask for a price rather than make a claim here that will be out of date by April.
How is the fruit ripened, and how would I know if it was carbide?
They are picked mature and ripened in hay, which is the traditional Konkan method and the one we use. We do not use calcium carbide, which is banned in India under the Food Safety and Standards regulations and is still widely used because it is fast. The practical difference you can see: carbide-ripened fruit colours evenly all over and stays hard inside, while hay-ripened fruit colours unevenly and softens from the shoulder. Our ripening guide covers the tells in detail.
Is this GI-tagged Ratnagiri Alphonso?
The fruit is grown in Khed taluka, Ratnagiri district, inside the area covered by the Alphonso GI. What the GI tag protects is the name and the growing region, not a quality certificate for each box — it is worth understanding what it does and does not mean, which is why we wrote a guide on it. Anyone selling “GI-certified” fruit as though each mango carries a certificate is overstating it.
Will the fruit have marks on it?
Yes, and it should. Sap streaks from the stalk, fine dark lenticel freckles and uneven colouring are all normal on untreated, unwaxed fruit picked with the stem on. We do not cosmetically grade. What is not normal, and what you should tell us about, is soft sunken patches, a blackened wet ring at the stem, or white fuzz.
Season and timing
When is the season, exactly?
Roughly late March to early June, with the best eating usually through late April and May. The dates move by two or three weeks each year depending on when the trees flowered and whether there was unseasonal rain, so anyone giving you firm dates in January is guessing. The season calendar explains why the window shifts.
Can I get Alphonso out of season?
Not fresh, from us or from anyone honest. Fruit sold as Alphonso in November is either cold-stored from the previous season, imported from the southern hemisphere, or a different variety entirely. What does survive the off-season properly is tinned Ratnagiri pulp, which is canned at peak ripeness and is a genuinely good stand-in for aamras — we list one on the pantry shelf.
Should I order early in the season or wait?
If you want the cheapest good fruit, wait for May. If you want the first Alphonso of the year and do not mind paying a premium for it, order in the last week of March. Early fruit is not better fruit — it is scarcer fruit, and the price reflects scarcity rather than quality.
Delivery
Where do you deliver?
Across India, and to the UAE. Reachability and transit time vary a great deal by pin code, and for mango that matters more than it does for most parcels — a box that takes five days to arrive is a box of ripe fruit on arrival. Send us your pin code before you plan around a date.
How is the fruit packed, and is it refrigerated in transit?
Packed in a ventilated carton with hay or paper, fruit in a single layer, stems up, not touching. Deliberately not refrigerated. A mango chilled below about 10 °C before it is ripe suffers permanent chilling injury and will never sweeten properly, so refrigerated transport is the wrong answer for raw fruit even though it sounds like the careful one. There is more on this in the shipping guide.
What if the box arrives damaged, short, or with rotten fruit?
Photograph it before you unpack further and send us the pictures on WhatsApp the same day. A couple of marked or over-ripe mangoes in a 48 box is within the normal range of a farm-direct consignment and we will usually make it up on the next order. A box that is short on count, crushed in transit, or has significant rot is our problem and we will replace or refund it. The refund policy has the formal version.
The mangoes arrived hard. Did something go wrong?
No — that is correct. Fruit is dispatched mature but unripe so it survives the journey. Take it out of the carton within the hour, lay it in a single layer somewhere cool, dark and airy, and let it ripen over the following three to six days. Do not put it in the fridge. Our home ripening guide has the day-by-day version.
Everything ripened at once. What now?
Common with a 48 box and the main reason people under-order. Once a mango is soft at the shoulder and fragrant at the stem, the fridge finally helps — three to four days in the vegetable drawer, brought out two hours before eating. Beyond that, pulp it and freeze it; frozen pulp keeps its aroma far better than frozen fruit. The aamras guide covers what to do with a glut.
About this site
Why are there Amazon links on a mango site?
Because the season is eight weeks and the site runs twelve months. The pages under Mewaa Bazaar carry affiliate links to Amazon: if you buy through one we earn a small commission and you pay exactly the same price. That revenue is what pays for the site to exist in the nine months when there is no fruit to sell. We say so on every page that carries them, and the disclosure page has the full statement.
Do you show prices or ratings for those Amazon products?
No. Amazon's operating agreement only permits displaying live prices and star ratings through their Product Advertising API, and a number typed in by hand goes stale within days. Every product tile sends you to the listing, where the current price and the real rating are.
Still not answered?
WhatsApp is the fastest route — +91 88052 79498, nine in the morning to nine at night. For anything that needs a paper trail, the contact page has the email address and the postal address in Ratnagiri. If the question is about ripening, storage or telling real Alphonso from a lookalike, the written guides probably answer it in more depth than we could here.
