Kokum & Coconut Care
Kokum and coconut are the two crops that grow alongside the mango in Konkan, and both of them end up in the bathroom as often as the kitchen. This is that half of the harvest.
Kokum butter, and why it is not shea
Kokum butter is pressed from the seed of the same fruit whose rind sours a Konkan fish curry. Nothing is wasted: rind to the kitchen, seed to the press.
It behaves differently from shea or cocoa butter. It is harder at room temperature, it melts closer to skin temperature, and it is low enough in scent that it does not fight whatever else you put on. In a humid coastal summer that hardness is the point — a shea balm goes to liquid in a Mumbai bathroom and kokum does not.
Buy it raw and unrefined if you can. Refined kokum butter is whiter and smoother and has had most of what distinguishes it taken out.
On prices. We do not list prices. Amazon only permits it through their live pricing feed, and a hand-typed number is wrong within a week. Every tile goes to the listing where the current price is.
Ten from the press
Kokum first, then coconut, then the things you use them with. Every one of these is a live link.

Kokum
Raw kokum butter
Pressed from kokum seed. Hard in the jar, melts on skin, and the least processed thing on this page.
View on Amazon
A 100 g tub. It softens in a Konkan summer, which is the point.
-
Coconut
Virgin coconut oil, cold pressed
Cold pressed smells of coconut. Refined smells of nothing, which is how you tell them apart.
View on Amazon
Cosmetic grade, not the cooking jar — lighter and more expensive for it.
-
Hair oil
Coconut hair oil
The Sunday-morning kind. Warm it, leave it an hour, wash it out.
View on Amazon
The one litre jug. It sets solid below about 24°C; stand it in warm water.
-
Kokum
Kokum butter lip balm
Kokum butter sets harder than shea, so it stays put in Konkan humidity.
View on Amazon
Kokum with honey, in a tin rather than a stick.
-
Hair oil
Bhringraj hair oil
The other half of the oiling habit. Usually sold blended with coconut or sesame.
View on Amazon
Blended, not pure bhringraj — almost all of them are.
-
Coconut
Handmade coconut oil soap
Cold-process soap from coconut oil lathers hard and lasts. Check it is not just a glycerin base with fragrance.
View on Amazon
Cold-process, so a bar outlasts a supermarket one.
-
Kokum
Kokum body butter
For heels and elbows after a monsoon. Heavier than a lotion and meant to be.
View on Amazon
The best rated thing on this page, on only nineteen reviews so far.
-
Hair
Neem wood comb
Does not build static the way a plastic comb does, which matters if you oil your hair.
View on Amazon
Wood splits if it stays wet. Dry it after a wash.
-
Skin
Ubtan pack
Haldi, chandan and gram flour. The pre-wedding paste, sold ready-mixed.
View on Amazon
Ready-mixed rather than loose powder, which is the slow way.
-
Hair
Coconut milk shampoo
The wash that follows the oil. Coconut milk and aloe, without the sulphates that strip it straight back out.
View on Amazon
The 1.2 litre bottle works out cheaper per wash than the small one.
Affiliate links. The tiles above go to Amazon. If you buy through one we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the price you pay or what we put on this page. Full disclosure.
An honest note on this page
This is the highest-paying category on the site by some distance, and we want to be straightforward that we know it. Beauty and personal care pay roughly twice what groceries do on Amazon India.
That is not why these are here — kokum and coconut are genuinely what Konkan grows, and the oiling habit is not something anyone in this part of the country had to be sold. But if you ever wonder why an affiliate page drifts towards skincare, that is the arithmetic behind it, and you should apply the same suspicion to ours as to anyone else's.
