Health & Wellness

Half of this shelf is measuring instruments and the other half is things that help after you have overdone it. We have tried to write it the way we write about mangoes — what the thing actually does, what it does not do, and where the cheaper answer is just as good.

We are a fruit business, not a clinic. Nothing on this page is medical advice and none of these devices diagnose anything. A home monitor produces a number; what the number means is a conversation with a doctor. If a reading worries you, that is the next step, not a different gadget.

A monitor is a record, not a verdict

The single most common mistake with home health devices is taking one reading, reacting to it, and never taking another. One blood-pressure reading tells you almost nothing. Fourteen readings taken the same way at the same time of day tell your doctor a great deal, and that is the only reason to own the machine.

How to take a reading that is worth recording, in the order that matters: sit still for five minutes first, feet flat on the floor and back supported; put the cuff on bare skin, not over a sleeve; keep the arm resting at about the height of your heart; and do not talk during the measurement. Doing all four changes the result more than the difference between a cheap machine and an expensive one.

The same discipline applies to the scale. Weigh yourself once a week, on the same morning, before breakfast, on a hard floor rather than on a rug — a scale on tile and the same scale on carpet will disagree by a surprising amount. Daily weighing mostly measures how much water you drank yesterday.

On prices. We do not list prices anywhere on this site. Amazon's rules only allow it through their live pricing feed, and a number typed in by hand is wrong within a week. Every tile goes to the listing where the current price is.

The upper-arm rule

If you buy only one thing from the measuring half of this page, buy an upper-arm blood pressure monitor rather than a wrist one. Wrist cuffs are cheaper and more convenient and they are far more sensitive to how you are holding your arm, which is exactly the variable a home user gets wrong. Every monitor on this page is an upper-arm model for that reason.

Ten things worth keeping in the house

Monitors first, then the recovery half. Every one of these is a live link.

Affiliate links. The tiles above go to Amazon. If you buy through one we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the price you pay or what we put on this page. Full disclosure.

What the numbers do not tell you

A home monitor measures one thing at one moment. It cannot see the context — that you slept badly, that you walked up three flights before sitting down, that the cuff was over a shirt sleeve. This is why a single alarming reading is usually a reason to take another one properly rather than a reason to panic, and why a fortnight of ordinary readings is worth more than any single number.

It is also worth saying that the cheapest things on this page are the ones with the best evidence behind them. Walking, sleeping and eating something other than fried food will move these numbers further than anything you can order. We sell fruit, so we would say that, but it happens to be true.
