Gym & Fitness

This is not a Konkan kitchen shelf and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is here because the mango season runs eight weeks and the site runs twelve months. What we can do honestly is tell you the order to buy this stuff in, because almost everyone gets it backwards and ends up with a treadmill under a bedsheet.

Buy in this order, not the other one

The pattern we keep seeing is someone spending twenty thousand rupees in week one and nothing in week six. The equipment that survives contact with real life is the equipment that is already out on the floor when you have fifteen minutes and no enthusiasm.

First, a mat. Not because the mat does anything, but because unrolling it is the decision. Everything after that is downhill. A 4 mm EVA mat is enough for floor work; 6 mm if you have hard tiles and bony knees; anything thicker is for yoga, not for planks, because a soft mat wobbles under a push-up.

Second, resistance bands. They cost less than one month of a gym membership, they fit in a drawer, and for the first three months they will do everything a rack of weights would. The loop set is for legs and hips. The tube set with handles and a door anchor is for pulling, which is the half of the body most home workouts skip entirely.

Third, one pair of dumbbells. One. Not a set. The useful weight is the one you can press for about ten repetitions and no more, which for most people starting out is 5 kg a side for pressing and too light for legs within a month. Hex-shaped so they do not roll, rubber-encased so they do not chew the floor.

Fourth, a pull-up bar — and only if you have a doorframe that can take it. This is the single highest-value piece on the page, because nothing else loads the back properly at home.

On prices. We do not list prices anywhere on this site. Amazon's rules only allow it through their live pricing feed, and a number typed in by hand is wrong within a week. Every tile goes to the listing where the current price is.

What we would not buy first

A treadmill. It is the most-bought and most-abandoned object in Indian home fitness, it costs more than everything else on this page put together, and walking outside is free. Buy one when you have trained for six months and the only thing stopping you is rain.

Ab gadgets with a motor. The roller on this page works because it is hard, not because it is clever.

A full dumbbell set with a stand. You will outgrow the light ones and never touch the heavy ones. Buy one pair, use it until it is easy, then buy the next pair up.

Ten things that earn their space

Roughly in the order above — the cheap decisive things first, the equipment after. Every one of these is a live link.

Affiliate links. The tiles above go to Amazon. If you buy through one we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the price you pay or what we put on this page. Full disclosure.

How much weight to start with

The honest answer is less than you think and it does not matter much. Pick a weight you can lift about ten times with the last two being genuinely hard. If you can do fifteen, it is too light; if you cannot do eight, it is too heavy. That is the whole method, and it works for every movement on this page.

The thing that actually decides results is turning up three times a week for three months, which is why the cheap end of this page matters more than the expensive end. A mat and a set of bands used twice a week beats a treadmill used twice.
